William H. Atkins entered the U.S. Army on May 24, 1941 at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. He served in Normandy and Northern France. He served overseas from September 5, 1943, until July 18, 1945.

His awards include the European-Asiatic-Middle East with two bronze battle stars, the Good Conduct and the American Defense Ribbon. .

William was separated on September 30, 1945 as a Tech 5.
