1st LT Paul Claxton Calhoun

1st Lieutenant Paul Claxton Calhoun (May 15 1894 – Feb 27 1918)

Paul Claxton Calhoun was born on March 15, 1894, the son of Isaac Richard Calhoun and Sula Claxton in Covington. He entered the United States Army as an Infantry 2nd Lieutenant on May 15, 1917 at the age of 23 at Fort Oglethorpe, Ga. While participating in bayonet training at Camp Wheeler in Macon, Ga., he collapsed from overexertion and died on Feb. 27, 1918. He was laid to rest on March 2, 1918 at R.H. Munford Cemetery in Covington.

Lieut. Calhoun has the distinction of being the first Tipton Countian to give his life in service of his country during World War I. His cousin, Dan Calhoun, was the first Tipton County soldier to lose his life during the Civil War and another cousin, George Mayes, was the first and only Tipton County to give his life during the Spanish American War.
